To clear the cache in Joomla 3, go to the System dropdown menu.

Select Clear Cache

This will bring you to a screen with a list of the folders that contain cached files.

You can choose to clear cache from individual folders by clicking the checkbox next to one folder(s) name. If you want to clear all cache, click the checkbox at the top of the list.

After checking a box or boxes, select Delete at the top left. This clears all the cache.

If there is nothing in the list, you likely do not have caching enabled in the Global Configuration settings.

What is Cache?

When a visitor opens up a website created with Joomla, a web page is compiled on the spot using PHP from files in the Joomla installation and from information in the database.

In order to speed up page loads for the visitor, Joomla will save compiled information for these pages. The compiled information is saved for when the visitor comes to the site. This information is saved in the cache folder of your Joomla installation.

Clearing the cache will get rid of all these pre-compiled pages and will provide a fresh page that takes a bit longer to load.

Browsers, such as Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox, also have caching to speed up page loads. Browsers will cache things like image files and stylesheets.

If you make a change to your styling, images or other things, but then it is not reflected when you upload the page to a browser, clearing the cache may be necessary.
