menuitemtypearticles

Articles and Categories are created under the Content section of Joomla 3. Once you create the Articles and place them in Categories, you need to tell Joomla how you want them displayed. You do this when you create a Menu Item for a Menu.

When you are creating a Menu Item, you click on Select next to Menu Item Type. This brings up a popup box. To use Articles for the content of your web page, you select Articles and the accordion menu expands to the list of possible options for displaying your Articles in a specified mannner.

You can simply choose to display a Single Article as the content on your page or there are many many ways to display your Articles when you have sorted them into Categories. You can also make a page of Archived Articles for people to access.

The options for these Menu Item Types are:

Archived Articles

This Menu Item Type will create a webpage that displays all of your archived articles. The Archived Articles will appear as a List of Titles, with whatever information such as Publish date, hits, etc. you wish to show and a small Intro of the article.  The visitor can then click on the Title to read the entire Article.

Advanced Options Tab -> Archive Options Section

  • Article Order: Display by the age of the Article, the Title, the Author, the Number of Hits or how you have them ordered in the Article Manager.
  • Date for Ordering: Use the date it was Created, Modified or Published.
  • # Articles to List: How many of your Archived Article to you want to display in the list
  • Filter Field: Do you want visitors to be able to enter a term for filtering the list.
  • Intro Text Limit: To how many words do you want to limit the Intro.

Single Article

This Menu Item Type will allow you create a web page with a Single Article as its content. The Single Article option allows you to select and existing Article regardless of its Category.

As soon as you select Single Article form the list, Joomla puts in a new selection in the Detail Tab where you must select which article you want to use. The Article must already exist and you must select the Article in order to save this Menu Item.

Create Article

This Menu Item Type will create a page where a User that is logged into the Front End of the site can create a new Article IF they belong to a User Group that is allowed to create Articles.

Note: It is best to set the Access Level for this Menu Item to Author. If it is set to Author, the Menu Item will only appear after the user has logged into the Front End and if the user belongs to a User Group that can contribute Articles. If it is not set to the proper Access Level and the user selects the Menu Item, they will get a 404 Error page.

The Create a New Article page will allow the user to create an article.  Depending on the settings for that person's User Group, they can select the Category for that Article, the Access Level, the Language and create Meta tag information for the Article.

The Article will not appear on the site until someone in the User Group Publisher sets the Article to Published.
